With a very dry summer that we had, it seemed as if autumn would never show its face. But it finally came. The temperature has dropped and now the air is crisp. The colors of the trees have various hues of red, orange, yellow, and brown.... gorgeous! Sweaters and jackets have taken the front section of my closet. The fireplace has already been put to good use, and now I'm ready for some hot chocolate!
A change in the season in my life has also occurred. I recently lost my dear grandmother who was 92 years old. She was the matriarch of our family and was loved by so many. She had been suffering from a lot of health issues and pain for several years. She recently had a stroke and ultimately ended up going on hospice. It wasn't long before she passed away and oh how my heart misses her loving presence.
Not all changes in the seasons of life are heartbreaking. Some are welcomed changes, like leaves transforming from green to gold! But some testing times can show up at your doorsteps and you have to figure out what to do.
As a speech therapist, I know of some difficult times that one might run into: birth of a child with a cleft palate or a genetic disorder, noticing that your child seems significantly behind his/her peers, diagnosis of a cognitive disability, a specialist using the word "autistic" when referring to your child, suffering a brain injury after an accident, or seeing a loved one dealing with the consequences of a stroke. Tough seasons in life? You bet. I encourage anyone going through these trying times to get help because it is out there. Even if it feels like the next season will never come, some day, you might blink and find yourself transitioning to another season. Hopefully this time it's a more colorful one.
